Prediction: Fleets will begin to focus as much on psychological safety as physical safety

Inge-Marie Hilligan, group executive for product and culture at Optix

Safety is no longer simply a matter of accident prevention, with organisations under increasing pressure to look after their employees’ mental well-being in addition to their physical safety. In fleets the two are inextricably linked and this is prompting a more holistic view of safety that starts long before the driver even steps into the cab.

We can expect to see fleets putting in more structured measures for the psychological safety of drivers, including monitoring for patterns in behaviour as well as increased coaching and support. This should also extend to creating a supporting working environment and culture where drivers feel safe to speak up and report issues without fear.

A driver whose psychological well-being is compromised through stress or tiredness is at a much higher risk of causing an accident on the road, with behaviours such as distraction and fatigue some of the most common causes of fatal crashes

Taking measures to protect drivers is likely to become a differentiator in 2026 for fleets who want to reduce risk and promote a culture of safety. In doing so, they will increase their retention rates and become a more attractive employer.
